About:

Bristol Cathedral is one of the city’s most treasured spaces – a place of history, community, and quiet wonder right in the heart of College Green, Bristol. This summer, we’re looking for friendly, outgoing people to join the Visitor Experience team and help the Cathedral welcome the thousands of visitors who will pass through their doors during the busy summer season.

Whether it’s greeting someone on their first visit, helping a family find their way around, or sharing the story of the Cathedral with a curious tourist, you will be at the heart of creating a warm and memorable experience for everyone who walks in.

Roles and Responsibilities:

As a Visitor Experience Assistant, you will be part of the team that makes Bristol Cathedral feel welcoming to everyone who walks through the door. You will be based at the main welcome desk and shop, with the occasional shift across College Green at the Lord Mayor’s Chapel on Saturdays.

Rather than staying fixed behind a desk, you will move around the Cathedral throughout your shift; greeting visitors, answering questions, and helping people find their way. You will be the friendly face that carries the warmth of the welcome desk through the rest of the building.

  • Greeting visitors as they arrive and giving them a warm, helpful introduction to their visit.
  • Encouraging donations at Cathedral stations and till – donations keep the Cathedral open and accessible, so this matters, but it’s about reading the room. Some visitors are unused to paying to enter a cathedral, so it’s a balance of encouragement and tact.
  • Being a friendly first point of contact at reception; updating colleagues about deliveries or visitors arriving for meetings, and flagging anything that needs attention, from antisocial behaviour to a visitor who might need a bit of extra support.
  • Handling payments, cash and card, via an Epos till system, including opening and closing the till.
  • Processing shop sales through the Cathedral’s Epos system.
  • Keeping the shop well-stocked and looking its best.
  • Checking tour tickets with a careful eye – these aren’t scanned, so it’s a visual check of date, time, and numbers.
  • Lending a hand to the wider Cathedral team, particularly the Vergers, during events like recitals, services, and weddings.

Skills and Experience:

  • Warm, welcoming and a genuine people-person.
  • Confident in engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Front of house experience: ideally in a customer-facing / hospitality / retail, or visitor attraction setting.
  • Able to work as part of a team under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Punctual, reliable and proactive.
  • Experience with soft-sell charity fundraising
  • Comfortable moving around the Cathedral for the duration of a shift.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Successful candidates will be required to undergo and pass a basic DBS check
  • You must be a UK resident or have the right to work in the UK
  • You must be able to provide at least two references from previous employers
